Job Search Topics

Thank you to IABC Yankee Chapter, the IABC Heritage Region Conference, and Ted Chaloner of Chaloner Associates for sharing tips from Ted's Heritage Region Conference presentation on the use of the social media for job search and career management. Below is an article based on Ted's presentation.

Social Media:  How new forms of communications are changing job search and career management -  By Rich Young, Chaloner Associates

Recently a company, Mzinga, asked people applying for jobs not to contact them by email and not to send resumes, especially in MS Word. We think that this will happen more and more as digital communications and social networking extend their reach into job search and career management. What can you do?

In 2006, “Time” magazine chose to highlight the rise in the sharing of online content and the importance of the emerging online community. They did this in a special issue of featuring their “Person of the Year.” The person selected for the issue was “You.”

Content focused on “You” as the face of social media, with the following as proof points:

           1.  57% of Internet users have joined a social network, making it the number one platform for creating and sharing content.

           2.  73% of users have read a blog.

           3.  There are now over 184 million bloggers worldwide.

           4.  Social media overtook porn as the #1 use of the Internet

Universal McCann is a full service media communications agency, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies. They are one of the top ten global media networks. According to Universal McCann in March 2008:

ź         The vast majority of users are producing content and there is an ongoing shift towards participation.

ź         Consumers are moving to on-demand media such as video clips and pod casts.

ź         Emerging Internet markets are leading the way in usage, closing the gap with developed countries.

So, what social networking groups are you using? LinkedIn? Facebook? Myspace?  Did you know that on all three, you can see posted jobs? Why not use this phenomenon to capitalize on career networking and finding a job?

Blogs vs. Wiki
The term “blog” seems to be changing. The traditional definition of a blog, or web log, is when an individual or group of users produce an ongoing narrative. But, many websites are calling themselves blogs even if they don’t produce an ongoing narrative. Some are calling themselves blogs if the only narrative is simply a post now and then. Traditional blogs allow subscribers to read and comment on posts.

Blogs are a better communication tool when you want to get information out to people, and want to enable feedback, but keep the original text intact.  Wikis are better when you want information to be touched -- and enhanced -- by as many hands as possible.

Examples of Blogs for Job Search & Career Management:
Linked In - a social networking site mainly used for professional networking. As of May 2008, it had more than 24 million registered users, spanning 150 industries. The site allows  registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection.

This list can be used in a number of ways:

      ·        A contact network is built up consisting of their direct connections, the connections of each of their connections and also the connections of second degree connections. This can be used to gain an introduction to someone you wish to know through a mutual, trusted contact.

·        It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network.

·        Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates.

·        Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing contacts can introduce them.

·        The searchable LinkedIn Groups feature allows users to establish new business relationships by joining alumni, industry, or professional and other relevant groups.

Facebook - Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves.

Several different applications have been added that enable users to post their resumes on their Facebook page. The resume is then available to everyone in the users network

MyWorkster - allows users to separate your personal and professional life -- keeping MySpace and Facebook pictures away from your work life. On MyWorkster, one does not have to worry about potential employers discovering embarrassing and unprofessional photographs or wall posts. Similar to Facebook, it allows the user to create a network of people that he/she knows or would like to get to know on a business level.

This is a great way to connect with the business world to post your resume and work samples. It is an easy way to get “seen” without having to actively pursue any particular job and to put yourself out there and get noticed.

Twitter -  is a website for micro blogging. It enables users to share bite size updates about their life. Users are able to follow updates of friends via the web. Twitter looks like a blog -- with short 140 characters -- enabling users to paint pictures of friends, family and coworkers. Plus, friends are able to follow your updates.

VisualCV - started by a group of investors, primarily search firms, as a way for top level executives to stand out among the standard resume. Anyone can use VisualCV. Now, it’s more than merely a recap of your work experience. Employers can actually get a sense of who you are.

VirtualJobCoach - a great way to personally manage your job search online. This career management site requires a paid subscription of $9.95. It allows the user to track interviews, schedule appointments and store resumes and cover letters. It also automatically updates its users with job opening that match their criteria.

Ning - Facebook and MyWorkster are broad social websites. If you have a niche -- go directly to that niche and weed out all of the other junk. Didn’t find your niche? Well create it! Ning is a website that lets you create a social network for ANYTHING! It is a great way to build a community around something that really interests you. And, it allows you to create your own social network. All you have to do is to simply choose the name and web address.

With so many social networking sites, which ones are the best to use?
It depends on the individual and what they are interested in. Why not have as many as possible? However, if you do not want to keep up with all of the sites -- be specific. If you have no idea what you’re looking for, look to the most popular social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn. Sites have a lot to do with personal preference. Think about which ones are the easiest for you to navigate. Also, what sites are used by most of your immediate friends?

What about transparency? Most of the social networking sites you can control who sees your profile. Just remember, you are posting things on the Internet -- and that they are accessible to the entire world.
